Reader’s Question:

Is car insurance in Texas mandated? What is the basic coverage I could get?

Ulysses

Austin Texas

The minimum amount of car insurance coverage in your locality that you are required to have in order to drive your car on the road legally depends on the state you are in. The Insurance Department in each state sets the rules and regulations regarding the minimum coverage required by car owners. Although this will set the guidelines for each car insurance companies on the minimum insurance coverage to their customers, they can add their own riders or add-ons, which are additional types of insurance coverage attached to the main car insurance coverage.

The basic car insurance coverage in general is the liability coverage. This type of coverage will pay for the property damages and the bodily injuries that you have caused to other people and their cars during an accident. This is basically the type of insurance coverage that the state mandates. It is usually written in three numbers representing the coverage limits a car insurance policy can give in terms of liability for bodily injury per person in an accident, liability for bodily injury to all people injured and property damage liability for one accident. The minimum required car insurance coverage in Texas is 25/50/25. This means that in any accident, the insurance policy will cover you for up to $25,000 in bodily injuries per person, $50,000 in bodily injuries total, and $25,000 in property damages.

Reader’s Question:

I’m moving to a different state. Should I continue my life insurance in Austin or cancel it?

Scott

Austin TX

An insurance agent would most likely say that you not discontinue or cancel your life insurance Austin. And he would have good reasons. For one, if the company that carries your insurance policy has a branch or affiliate in that state you are moving to, then you can probably transfer it. The good thing about this is that there will be less paperwork to be done.

Before you make any decision though, you need to bring out your insurance policy and read it again. If you have a term life insurance, then you may not get anything if you cancel your policy. This would be bad for you since it means that you have just wasted all those years paying for the premiums. Not only that, the benefits that you expected to receive if something bad happens is also canceled. Thus discontinuing the policy would be like flushing money down the toilet.

You may want to cancel your life insurance Austin if you feel that if you move to another state, you would encounter problems that could result in you not being able to continue your policy. You may also need to read your policy if you will continue to be covered even if you’re in another state.

If you have whole life insurance, you may be able to come to a decision easier. This is a life insurance policy where you may not need to pay the premiums anymore. We know that most insurance policies can be canceled by not paying the premiums anymore. This type of insurance though makes use of the “cash value” of your policy in order to pay the remaining premiums. This is only effective if you have been paying the premiums long enough.

If you’re hesitant to do either of the two, you can sell it especially if you bought a life settlement policy.

If you’re still having problems on what to do about your life insurance Austin, you can always talk to your agent or the company. Talking to your family members can also help a lot. So good luck on your move to another state and hope you make a decision that you are comfortable with.

Reader’s Question:

I’m am real estate broker in Texas. I just received some notice by mail that my license has been suspended. I still can’t quite believe it. I was even going to switch auto insurance companies. I’ve been asking insurers to give me free auto insurance quotes. Now, it seems that my license is suspended! Can I still purchase auto insurance coverage in spite of this?

Harry

Austin, TX

Hey! Do you have any idea why it was suspended? You can check your driving record. I think you can order a copy of your driving record at a Driver License Division or DLD compliance location in person. The office is probably open from Mondays to Fridays; so if you’ve got some free time, visit one. There are four compliance locations and if you go to the one in Austin, you can get your driving record on the same day. You can also order this online or send an application to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Driver Records Bureau by mail. Mail takes longer, though, so it’s not such a good idea. Type 1, which is what you’ll need to get know whether your license was really suspended or not, costs about four dollars if I’m not mistaken.

As for getting free auto insurance info and quotes, just go ahead, Harry. Some companies sell auto insurance under certain conditions. I had a friend who once needed an SR-22 to reinstate his license and he was able to purchase coverage–no problem! Some companies would just give you, like, 30 days to reinstate your license. Finally check with the state offices how much you have to pay as penalty. You need to settle this to remove the suspension on your license and get back on the road.
